Walmart closes its Safeway pharmacy in Melbourne
Posted September 09, 2018 07:18:47The retail giant announced that it has closed its Safeways pharmacy in Sydney’s CBD, in what it said was a strategic decision to focus on its core business in Australia and its distribution network.
“Safeways is a unique retail outlet that has proven its value in Australia, and our commitment to providing exceptional service to our customers is the driving force behind our decision to close the store,” Walmart said in a statement on Wednesday.
The decision to shut the store came after a month of protests against the store by its employees and customers, and the company’s decision to scrap the pharmacy’s long-standing policy of charging the same prices for prescriptions as other pharmacies in the country.
In February, Walmart Australia, which is based in the Sydney suburb of Brunswick, said it was cutting 7,000 jobs.
