How did the Green Pharmacy make $200M?
In 2016, the Australian Pharmacy Association (APA) published its annual report on the Australian pharmaceutical industry.
The report found that in the first half of 2018, the average pharmacy spending was $180 million and that the average pharmacist spent an average of $12,000 per year.
The APA noted that although the average annual salary of a pharmacy manager was $62,000, this figure was likely inflated because the APA excluded pharmacy management positions.
The report found a trend towards increased spending by pharmacies as the pharmacy workforce became more skilled, experienced, and educated.
The average pharmacy manager earned an average annual wage of $62.57, compared to $54.30 in 2016.
Dr Matthew Regan, a pharmacy consultant from Melbourne, told the ABC the trend was evident across the board.
“It’s a lot of money.
It’s very competitive, and it’s definitely on the rise.
So I think it’s going to continue to grow,” he said.
The APA is a lobby group representing pharmacy employers and health practitioners.
In 2017, the APMA recommended that the Federal Government provide a range of incentives to help pharmacy managers, pharmacists, and pharmacy management roles gain more competitive skills.
Mr Regan said there were a number of incentives available, but there were also some concerns that pharmacy managers might have difficulty gaining experience and gaining more advanced training.
He said there was an issue of not having sufficient pharmacist training to fill in the gaps in training.
“We don’t know what the right level is, and we don’t have the right training for the job that we have,” he explained.
“It needs to be a mix of different things, which is a bit like an apprenticeship, and the right balance of experience and skills.”
Dr Regan noted that the APM has developed a number to help ensure that the right pharmacist is trained, including an online training program.
“What we’ve seen is that the people who are applying for pharmacy roles are more likely to have a bachelor’s degree,” he told the BBC.
He said that although there are a number pharmacists who have completed pharmacy degrees, many are in areas such as pharmacy education, which could lead to a lower earning potential for those who apply.
“You need a good pharmacist, you need good knowledge of the profession and the pharmacists are the ones who have the skills that they need,” he added.
As the APAs annual report said, pharmacist education was key to gaining competitive skills, particularly in the pharmacist management field.
Dr Reggitt said pharmacists were also a key workforce in the healthcare sector.
“There’s a shortage of pharmacist jobs, and this is something that we need to work towards,” he stressed.
“If we can recruit people who have these skills and they can understand the job, they can fill that gap and we can keep the jobs in pharmacy,” he concluded.
